Tagline Ads: Will Native Ads Take the Day?

By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com and tagline.tech

It is very possible that the advent of adblocker apps will drive a shift towards more native advertising or sponsored posts (i.e. tagline ads). Whereas websites place advertorial style content in editorial posts with disclosure regarding what is paid for. Yes, the ad blocker apps are a direct attack on Googles  revenue platform. However, tagline ads could be the beneficiary of the ad block apps. Adblock apps and browsers don't block domain names. Domain name are integral to every website and location on the Internet. Domain names represent the addressing system of the Internet.

Tagline ads can  be described simply as follows.

1. Tagline ads are domain names. (first, second, third, fourth level et al.)
2. Tagline ads are also taglines created with domain names.
3. Tagline ads are the most successful when used as links.

You see tagline ads are nothing more than creative use of the existing domain name system. Tagline ads utilize sub domains. Subdomains are extensions of your domain name that you can forward to URLs or point to IP addresses.

For example this is a domain name formulated as a tagline ad:

boston.real.estate.finance

Whereas .finance is the first level domain. estate(second level) real (third level) boston (fourth level) et al.

Tagline ads can be a form of native advertising that encompasses the various channels and methods of advertising along with utility of use and economy of  use. (easy to use and economical).

Here are some sample tagline ads that I put together using the new domain name extensions. Using your domain name administration panel there is no limit to the number of words that could use to develop your own personalized tagline:

not your.fathers.tube
linking.moms.online
the.john.and.mary.taylor.band
the.coffee.thats.seattles.best
detroits.working.man.beer
get.fast.at.lake.williams.bike
get.capetown.buzz
hawaii.waist.watchers.camp
join.the.artificial.intelligence.club

miami.guitar.lesson.guru
the.surfing.life
free.original.jamestown.pizza
play.your.highest.level.tennis
rated.best.charlestown.tours

Digital Taglines, Tagline Ads and Dot Slogans: The Language of Domains.

By Duane J. Higgins, ceo

xtradot.com and tagline.tech

There are the beginnings of a "buzz" around the Internet regarding a new domain name usage that has potential to be truly explosive.

Digital taglines,  tagline ads and dot slogans are an innovative domain name application that offer an array of new advertising, promotional and marketing channels for the Internet marketer and individual alike.

The impetus for this development of the domain name taglines has been that the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is facilitating the ongoing release of upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions. First we had .com, .net, .org and a handful of other domain name extensions. We now have or will soon have .app, .blog, .buzz, .guru, .fun, .group, .fashion, .love, .music, .news, .deals, .play, .shop, .sport, .video, .web, .club, .design, .flowers, .cool, .tube and on and on.

From day one the Internet has been "aflutter" with methods and strategies that we all use for location, identification, promotion and linking. From the individual to the corporation.  With the evolution of the Internet and how that medium is integrated into all of our lives- many identification techniques have been created over time. To name a few we have real names, user names. handles, email, screen names. aliases, domain names, web pages, urls, blog names, phone numbers and on and on.

So with the expanded opportunities for Internet domain name extensions available I wanted to talk about these new alternative and expanded uses for domain names: Domain Name taglines.

The definition of the tagline from Wikipedia.org is here: In entertainment, a tagline (or tag line[1][2]) is a small amount of text which serves to clarify a thought for, or designed with a form of, dramatic effect. Many tagline slogans are reiterated phrases associated with an individual, social group, or product. As a variant of a branding slogan, taglines can be used in marketing materials and advertising.

Also from Wikipedia: A slogan is a memorable motto or phrase used in a clan, political, commercial, religious, and other context as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose.

Digital taglines are nothing more than creative use of the existing domain name system. Domain name taglines utilize sub domains. Subdomains are extensions of your domain name that you can forward to URLs or point to IP addresses.  Sub-domains are nothing new. You will see many companies use them to indicate specialized sections of their website or for another purpose. Sub domains can easily be set up within the domain name administration panel.

According to Wikipedia.org:

A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain; the only domain that is not also a subdomain is the root domain.[1] For example, west.example.com and east.example.com are subdomains of the example.com domain, which in turn is a subdomain of the com top-level domain (TLD).

Following are a few examples of domain taglines for demonstration purposes only.  Note the dots between each word.

street.actor
skateboard.style
detroit.sexy
epic.rugby
pocket.cash
davis.rocks
football.life
gifted.one
joseph.cool
fearless.fashion
bostons.best
coding.guru
bostons.best
Digital taglines or dot slogans are not limited to two words. Here are a few examples or longer ones:

smash.mouth.rugby
your.country.cool
get.phone.cash
mary.baker.does.rock
seattle.bike.guru
not.your.fathers.sport
only.the.best.deals

You get the idea. With upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions currently being launched the possibilities are literally endless.

Expanded uses far beyond traditional domain names.
The best way to think of a domain tagline is much like a Twitter handle.

Only more like a phone number or email address.

The digital tagline affords the user opportunities for identification, branding, self expression and linking to other locations around the Internet.

I should note that the domain tagline is always a domain name. For example: football.life and bostons.best can be domain name taglines. They are also domain names.

However, a domain name is not necessarily a digital tagline.

Digital taglines also have the following uses and more:

Embedding in websites for marketing and SEO purposes (search engine optimization)
Traditional advertising
Digital advertising
Text and SMS marketing

We have begun experimentation with embedding digital taglines into our own websites. These taglines can serve as a stand alone entity (and be used for advertising purposes) or you can link from there to another location on your site or another site entirely.

Digital taglines can also be used as an advertisement unto themselves (i.e. tagline ads).

Tagline ads can be a form of native advertising that encompasses the various channels and methods of advertising along with utility of use and economy of  use. (easy to use and economical).

The digital tagline can be used anywhere that a domain name could be used and anywhere that a hashtag could be used and beyond. (We all know what hashtags are. They provide a way for social media users to tag their posts with keywords, which in turn make it easier for social networks to organize the information and for users to search.)

Think of digital taglines being attached to social media posts. (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) Remember that if you use the tagline you can then connect the tagline (string) to any other site or location that you want because the tagline is actually a domain name. Or you may just use the tagline as an identifier for you.

Digital taglines can be used in the body of any sms/text message. Allowing the user to include their tagline in the body of the text and consequently link to where you choose (or not).
Domain taglines can also be used for vanity email. For example: john@coding.guru

Digital Tagline vernacular can be integrated into everyday language just as the term "hashtag" is often used relating to social media posts. For example sleek.style would be pronounced sleek (dot) style. yoga.gal would be yoga (dot) gal and on and on. Further integrating the use of taglines into popular media and culture.

You could of course buy, sell and trade digital taglines. Much like what is done with domain names. Domain name marketplaces are numerous and already designed to trade and deal in virtual taglines and dot slogans.

Remember that every tagline is unique. This gives the tagline unique value. Unique to you. Your brand. Your online identity. However you wanted to look at it and use it.  No two would be the same.  (by the way, the uniqueness is what makes domain names so valuable to begin with). The value is in the differentiation. The uniqueness. The originality. The unique value that can not be replicated. For example. Capital.com is probably worth several million dollars. What do you think Captial.com is worth? (note the misspelling) Virtually nothing. Those value differentiations could apply to taglines as well.

There will soon be 1000 new domain name extensions. Certain domain extensions would certainly be "grooved" for virtual tagline marketing. Some of those were listed above such as: .app, .blog, .best, .buzz, .guru, .group, .fashion, .love, .music, .news, .one, .deals, .play, .shop, .sport, .video, .web, .club, .design, .flowers, .green, .cool, .tube and on and on.

So I did find it more than interesting that on (May 11, 2015) when news came out in various news channels that Facebook is testing its own in-app search engine. An application that will allow users to post links in their status updates. Without having to visit Google or another search engine.  The way it works is that users will see an "add a link" option next to buttons to add photos or other information.  I'm sure Facebook will be providing more information on this potential Google killer as we move forward. As I have mentioned domain taglines are nothing more than links. Links that either identify yourself with an Internet identity or brand or carry you to another location on the Internet. Just as most other domain names do.

There is also a very interesting recent article (by Barry Swartz) found in Search Engine Land.  According to the article:

"Google Confirms New Experiment with Twitter in Search Results."

According to this article Google is expected to begin showing Twitter content in search this month.

Google is apparently finally making use of the new deal it signed with Twitter to put tweets into Google’s search results. The company confirmed a “small experiment” that some are seeing in the search results.

Is this "small experiment" the beginning of something big and potentially the impetus for digital taglines, dot slogans and tagline ads to ingrain themselves into Twitter, social media and popular culture?

The "Seat" of Domain Names

By Duane J. Higgins,  ceo
xtradot.com and tagline.tech

Dictionary.com provides 22 different definitions for the term "seat." Definition number #9 in this case is as follows:

9. a place in which administrative power or the like is centered: the seat of the government.

So what about the "seat" of domain names as in the place where domain names reside in our individual and societal consciousness?
I had speculated in (October of 2013 when I wrote the following  blog post: Mobile Phone Numbers, Email Addresses and..... Domain Names) that Internet domain names could ultimately reach the place of usage in our society that is comparable to phone numbers and email addresses (i.e. that nearly everyone has a phone number and probably a majority of people in the U.S. have an email address nowadays).
Interestingly, it doesn't appear that we have quite gotten there yet in terms of my prognostications. Since,  I haven't given up on my vision yet, I'm taking this opportunity to repost some material from that October 2013 post:

Below are excerpts form that prior blog post:

"Believe it or not there may be a time in the coming years where the question of "what's your domain name?" will be as common as the oft repeated questions of yesteryear such as "what's your email address?" or "what's your mobile phone number?"

I went on further to proclaim:

"How long before we all have our own domain name? or two or three or dozens? My guess is that within 10 years owning an internet domain name will be as common as candy. As common as email addresses. As common as mobile phone numbers. In fact, I think the more common questions will be "how many domain names do you have?" and "what domains do you own" or "what's your domain portfolio valued at?"

So where are we at in our societal consciousness and usage of domain names at this point in time? Some, two and a half years following my bold statements?

Traditionally domain names have have primarily been used for web addresses and for investment purposes. If you look a the numbers on domain name usage you will see that domain names are primarily purchased as investments and not used for website or Internet addresses. (I'll save you from listing the name purchase statistics here). Suffice it to say that there are somewhere north of    300,000,000 total domain names registered worldwide (of all extensions). The .com continuing to lead the charge with over 125,000,000 total registrations.

As per latest report by verisign.com Internet grows to 294 Million Domain Names in the First Quarter of 2015.

In that October 2013 article I speculated the following:

With the ongoing release of upwards of 1000 new top level domain extensions such as .web, .fun, .pics, .pay, .app, .home, .tube, .win, .cloud, .life, .fun, .book, .movie, .online and on and on and on. - We are all going to have unlimited opportunities for the personalization of our own domain names. Domain names that will be used primarily as Internet identities and Internet addresses. The places that we live on the Internet. Just as most of us move around in the real world and end up having several physical addresses over time. That is what will happen with our domain names. Depending on the usage at the time and our goals and objectives, we will all own at least one or maybe several or dozens or hundreds of domain names over the course of our lives. Some of them we will keep. Some we will sell. Some we will even trade or lease. Just we we do with the places we live in our mobile lives in the real world. Our lives on the Internet will be mobile and changeable and adaptable as well. Innovative and valuable domain name uses are going to spring up and draw us into them. With the introduction of these upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions- domain name applications and uses for the consumer and commercial use alike can ultimately explode exponentially.

Adding to the luster of domain name ownership and registrations are the fact that many domain registrations are going to continue to be purely speculative. Just as they are now. Of the almost 290 million domain names currently registered, how many were registered for speculative purposes? I would venture a guess at least two thirds. Domain Names that were registered as primarily investments. A hedge against the future that someone would pay the individual more in the future than they paid for the name. That trend will continue to happen, grow and I suspect accelerate. Where else can you buy (register) a commodity for say 10-20 dollars and turn around and potentially sell it for thousands of dollars or more? Almost nowhere else. That's called a low barrier to entry. Buying domain names is easy. Speculating on them is fun. Look for that trend to mushroom as well.

With this release of upwards or 1000 new Top Level Domain extensions onto the global marketplace-we are going to gradually see Domain names take a new seat in our society. Domain names are going to become more prevalent, more common, more ordinary and more a part of our everyday lives.

As I mentioned before. Think of mobile phone numbers and think of email addresses. How long ago was it when none of us had either one of those? Just a few short years ago. That is where domains names may be. Quite possibly a big part of all of our lives. Meaning that most of us will have one or more and we will all know what they are and can be used for. Much different than today.

(I still say) just give it some time.

A New Take on Keyword Domain Names

By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com and tagline.tech

Keyword domain names have been around for a long time. Nearly as long as domain names themselves have been around. (The first registered domain name Symbolics.com  was created on March 15, 1985).

Keyword rich domain names are of course domain names that contain key "keywords" that can provide the user various advantages.

We believe that with the release of upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions (such as .accountants, .agency, .bargains, .builders, .cafe, .beer, .best, .buzz, .care, .center, .cool, .direct, .email, .guide, .help, .jewelry, .life, .lawyer, link, .love, .money, .menu, .ninja, .pizza, .pub, .rentals and on and on). -That the concept of keyword domain names could take on a whole new look and feel.

Here are some sample keyword domain names that I threw together. Note that with the use of "subdomains" that there is no limit to the number of dots that can be used between words and the number of words that can be used.

(yes these are all domain names and can be used in search engine marketing, any form of advertising and any way that a standard domain name could be used.)

crystal.clear.rocky.mountain.beer
living.the.surfing.life
boston.apartment.guide
seattles.best.injury.lawyer
protect.retirement.money
swim.bike.run.help
miami.apartments.condos
rocky.mountain.boutique
town.center.cab
real.estate.capital
high.roller.casino
jamestown.fellowship.church
back.spasm.clinic
cajun.style.cooking
super.value.coupons
restore.your.credit
chicagos.best.dentist
elegant.curtain.design
free.ebook.download
william.smith.engineer
planning.your.estate
online.motorcycle.finance
rare.orchid.florist
easy.rooftop.garden
platinum.silver.gold
town.bakery.hockey

quick.no.paper.loans
johnson.and.taylor.engineering.partners

design.personal.style
healthy.eating.and.lifestyle.system
pro.style.tennis
boston.harbor.tours
cabo.vacation.tours
russian.style.vodka
ufo.and.alien.video

The way that the domain names are set up in your domain name administration panel is that you would purchase the original domain name such as mountain.beer. You are then able to add the subdomains to the first and level domain names.

Example: crystal.clear.rocky.mountain.beer

*Keep in mind that I threw these above examples together in just about 5 minutes. I suspect that with some imagination and determination that far superior keyword domain names can be created and utilized in a very effective and successful fashion.

A few reasons you may want to use your domain name as a keyword domain name,  virtual tagline or dot slogan:

  1. Keyword taglines can be more interesting than website or company names.
  2. The domain name for your primary website may not be that great.
  3. Keyword taglines aid in comsumer recall.
  4. You can build custom landing pages.
  5. The keyword tagline can be used as a turnstile to track marketing.
  6. Keywords are the foundation of your website content.
  7. Keywords help visitors understand the purpose of your page.
  8. Keywords help search engines understand the purpose of your page.

Unleash the Dot! -With Digital Taglines and Dot Slogans!

By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com and tagline.tech

A digital tagline is a subdomain that is formatted and formulated into a traditional tagline.  Which can then be used to link to locations around the Internet. Just like the traditional domain name.

 For example:

not.your.ordinary.band

Note the dots between the words. The dots denote that this phrase (tagline) is also a domain name as well.

So to clarify a few points. What exactly is a subdomain?

According to Wikipedia.org:

A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain; the only domain that is not also a subdomain is the root domain.[1] For example, west.example.com and east.example.com are subdomains of the example.com domain, which in turn is a subdomain of the com top-level domain (TLD).

This is basic subdomain usage with a third level domain name::
.
http://products.yoursite.com

.com is the first level domain
yoursite is the second level domain
products is the third level domain

So what makes a subdomain a domain name tagline?

A subdomain becomes a domain name tagline when it is formatted as a tagline would be.

Because as it turns out that the same domain name system (DNS) that is capable of creating sub domains is quite capable of creating digital taglines as well.

From Wikipedia.org:

In entertainment, a tagline (alternatively spelled tag line[1][2]) is a short text which serves to clarify a thought for or is designed with a form of, dramatic effect. Many tagline slogans are reiterated phrases associated with an individual, social group, or product. As a variant of a branding slogan, taglines can be used in marketing materials and advertising.
The idea behind the concept is to create a memorable dramatic phrase that will sum up the tone and premise of an audio/visual product,[note 1] or to reinforce and strengthen the audience's memory of a literary product. Some taglines are successful enough to warrant inclusion in popular culture. Consulting companies which specialize in creating taglines may be hired to create a tagline for a brand or product.

Here are a few sample digital taglines that I threw together. Three words often work best however you can use as many words as you want. (you will just need to set that up in your domain name administration panel which is fairly simple to do):

real.estate.finance
not your.fathers.tube
linking.moms.online
quasi.shakespearean.actor
the.john.and.mary.taylor.band
simply.seattles.best
detroits.working.man.beer

Domain Names and Dot Taglines

By Duane J. Higgins, ceo,
xtradot.com and tagline.tech

So I have been writing here for a few months now regarding what I see as an innovative and potentially explosive application for Internet domain names. What I call "domain taglines" or  "taglines" for short.

What domain name taglines do is to "nudge" the historic domain name from its comfy loft as the "website name" or "website address" to a more expanded and variable usage of  the "domain name tagline."

The imptetus for the development of the "domain as tagline" concept comes from the ongoing introduction of upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions. We now have or will have the following new domain name extensions in addition to hundreds and hundreds more:

.app, .accountants, .blog, .beer, .best, .buzz, .cool, .direct, .email,  .guru, .fun, .group, .fashion, .life, .link, .love, .money, .music, .news, .ninja, .deals, .play, .shop, .sport, .video, .web, .club, .design, .flowers, .cool, .tube, .agency, .bargains, .builders, .cafe, .care, .center, .cheap, .clothing, .condos, .fitness, .guide, .help, .jewelry, .lawyer, market, .menu, .pizza, .pub, .rentals and on and on.

Domain taglines represent an expanded usage of traditional domain names. What they do is to utilize the domain name system (DNS) to create what are called 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th (etc) level domain names that create nifty phrases that can be used for linking.   To get right to the point here are some examples. I have separated business (tagline ads) from personal (social media) taglines as they are really different in style of usage.

  Example business/advertising taglines:

miami.seaside.rentals
best.frozen.pizza
return.to.seventies.fashion
bostons.original.beer
earn.extra.cash
seattle.bike.guru
the.freelancers.web
fantasy.sports.lovers.club
best.scallops.online
get.your.free.artisan.website
maine.made.shop.
super.secret.deals
home.and.hearth.design
local.lawn.and.garden.help
gluten.free.market
small.town.lawyer

Example social media taglines (identification, branding and linking):

dog.lovers.blog
street.actor
skateboard.style
detroit.sexy
epic.rugby
mary.davis.rocks
football.life
gifted.one
coding.guru
smash.mouth.football.
country.cool
cafe.buzz
why.not.look.your.best

None of these example taglines are even vaguely innovative or creative. I just threw them together for demonstration purposes. However, you can get the idea that there are limitless possibilities for creative and memorable taglines of unlimited creativity and length.

And just a few opportunities for linking from the tagline:

website
web page
blog
Twitter page
You Tube site
Instagram
Linkedin
your store or shop
social cause
political cause
political campaigns
sports teams
clubs and other groups etc.

I also wanted to bring up something very interesting with the advent of adblocker apps and browsers. What I find interesting is that the adblock apps will likely drive a shift towards more native advertising or sponsored posts. Whereas websites place advertorial style content in editorial posts with disclosure regarding what is paid for.

Yes, the ad blocker apps are a direct attack on Googles  revenue platform. However, it is very possible that tagline ads could be the beneficiary of the ad block apps. Adblock apps and browsers wont block domain names. Domain name are integral to every website and location on the Internet. Domain taglines are domain names as well.
