The new gTLD registrars are most certainly taking the "long view" regarding the prospective success of the new domain name extensions. With billions of dollars being invested in the new domain name extensions-the big time players are placing very calculated bets on the future of the Internet. (and the domain name industry as a whole) rather than much immediate success.
What will the Internet landscape look like in 10-20 years? No one has the slightest idea. What will the domain name landscape/marketplace look like in 10-20 years? No one worth their salt would place a bet in any direction there. There are so many question marks and only speculation.
Beyond the speculation I do have some givens that the new registrars are counting on as part of their calculus. Why else would the (at least four) largest players (Google, Uniregistry, Donuts and Amazon) be willing to pony up hundreds of millions of dollars each for just the chance at dictating this new domain name landscape?
Here are some givens that helped guide these big players to their investments:
1.) The registrars are counting on mostly slow and continued growth of their individual extensions. There likely won't be any wildly successful extensions right off the bat. Maybe .web or .shop and possibly others.
2.) Many (if not most with some extensions) of the registrations will be defensive in nature. Domain registrations done to protect name or proprietary interests. Defensive registrations. Some registries will have mostly defensive registrations and those numbers could number in the millions for those registries. That will be big profits.
3.) Speculative domain registrations will be rampant. There are already enough domain name speculators to cover this. Add in a few million new speculators to the mix and in some cases you will see a frenzy for certain extensions. That will be pure speculation. Registering domain names is too easy. All you need is credit card, paypal account or some form of payment. The costs are so low that theres essentially no barrier to entry. Why wouldn't many people jump on board and try to make some money? Why not take a chance on SanDiego.bike, Mystery.book, newage.music, or bankapp.financial? As I mentioned, the speculation (and frenzy) will be endless.
Some of the newest domain extensions are already available and hundreds and hundreds more will be introduced over the next few years.
Are you ready to place your bets?

Is the .cc Domain Extension a Sleeping Giant?
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com
With upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions about to be released onto the global marketplace, why would I devote an entire blog post to the .cc extension? An old, worn out, passe' country code that has yet to find an actual niche, significant target market or brand identity.
I did read on the Internet the other day that .cc was poised for a revival. The author didn't say why, how or when- however that it was going to happen. So I decided to do a bit of research on that extension and to find out just how a rebirth of that domain extension could or would happen.
First of all, the .cc extension has been bouncing around the Internet for some. Some brief information on that extension from Wikipedia:
.cc is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian territory of 5.4 square miles and about 600 inhabitants. It is administered by VeriSign through a subsidiary company eNIC, which promotes it for international registration as "the next .com"; .cc was originally assigned in October 1997 to eNIC Corporation of Seattle, Washington, by the IANA. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, an unrecognised country by the UN, that officially belongs to the republic of Cyprus, also uses the .cc domain.
Also, according to Wikipedia:
The .cc domain is preferred by many cycling clubs as well as churches and Christian organizations as "CC" also happens to be an abbreviation for "Christian Church" or "Catholic Church." Some open-source/open-hardware projects, e.g. the Arduino project, use a .cc for their home pages, as "CC" is the abbreviation for "Creative Commons", whose licenses are used in the projects. Business owners in Southern Massachusetts are rapidly adopting Cape Cod CC domains for local identity. Canadian Club whiskey has also used .cc domains for marketing purposes.
So in other words, .cc domain names are used for many things. No real defined target market. .cc has been a generalist rather than a specialist. A jack-of-all trades in the Internet community. Useful for many, valuable to few.
So, I'm thinking that with a thousand new domain extensions about to be introduced to the open market that .cc is dead in the water, right? Or maybe not.
Then it hit me like a ton of clicks.
What if a new identity were established for the .cc extension? A singular, identifying and universally recognized identity or focus. A brand identity.
What if the .cc domain extension were marketed as a "dot credit card" extension and how could that be applied or utilized as a domain extension?
Its not as far fetched as you might initially think. First of all, .credit and .creditcard have both been applied for with the new domain name extensions. If you ask me, I think that .cc is much better than .creditcard. The .CreditCard applicant has hundreds of millions of dollars behind it. Apparently, someone is quite serious about that extension and the value. Why not .cc instead or as well? It's shorter and easy to remember. That's just me. .Finance and .Financial are also applied for.
Let me give you a few examples of how the .cc (credit card) extension could be used/marketed to users:
Masked Credit Cards- One the buzz words of today. (See Forbes article dated 12/4/2013). How could the promoters of masked credit cards capitalize on this movement? Maybe your purchase your identity (with a .cc extension) such as JohnQDavis.cc. That is your highly secure sign in site for your account. You are able to manage all of your credit card accounts and move your funds around from there. Also, to manage your masked account. Part of the security is the unique identifiers/security layers that are used for you to sign into your personal site. Part of the security is the IP address that your sign in from and the ip address assigned to your domain name. No one else can get in and your credit card usage will be masked.
Account Management: See above. .cc could be (the) secure way to manage all credit card and online (credit) accounts.
Retailers- There could be highly secure advantages for online retailers (how many of them are there?) to have a separate (and highly secure) site/extension for credit card management. The key word is security. If .cc were to brand itself as the secure extension for credit card management/accounts that could really be branded that way.
Amazon.cc
Ebay.cc
Facebook.cc
Apple.cc
Samsung.cc
Microsoft.cc
Yahoo.cc
Google.cc
Virtual Credit Cards: With the developments in eWallets, virtual coins and currency you can use your imagination. I want to throw in a few wild cards though. Rotating IP addresses (like are sometimes used in the mobile industry) and shifting servers as in utilizing a variety of cloud servers that arbitrarily shift. All related to security that could be used and applied with the .cc extension. Again unique IP address and unique (IP) sign-in platform are part of the security.
(Just so you know, I'm not a technologist. Im just a blogger. The technology details are for someone else to work out.)
.CC might consider taking a lesson from the new .secure domain extension that has been applied for. According to the website of Artemis.net the group that has applied for the extension:
.secure is a unique Top-Level Domain (TLD) that provides Internet users with confidence to go about their business online in a trustworthy environment. The value of .secure comes from three core principals: verify, secure and enforce. There is a good deal more information on that site. However, the basic idea is that .secure will be the most secure domain extension of them all.
Just checking to see if your listening .cc?
Anyone else ready to invest in .cc (dot credit card)?
I'm in.

With the new gTLDs... Everyone Wins.
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com
After several years of planning- ICANN (the Internets governing body) did open up applications for proposed new gTLDs. They received over 1900 applications and are likely to introduce around 1000 new domain name extensions when the smoke clears.
There are two schools of thought swirling around the Internet (and often colliding) regarding the prospective success of the new domain extensions.
The first is that the new domain extensions (such as .shop, .web, .books, .music, .online, .app etc. etc. etc.) are the best thing that ever happened to the Internet. That opportunities will abound for the new registries and new domain name extensions. That the sky will be the limit for the new applications that are being developed and will be developed for the use of these new domain extensions.
The competing school of thought is that there are already 22 Global Top Level Domain Name extensions. They are listed here: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .edu, .gov, .mil, .int, .aero, .asia, .cat, .coop, .jobs,.mobi, .museum, .name, .pro, .post, .tel, .travel, .xxx. That this list of domain extensions has already met with only a mixed degrees of success regarding each individual extension. That with 22 current gTLDs that there is a very good argument that there is already too many. Some will argue that for example many of the extensions have already failed. The most often targeted extensions for this accusation are .mobi, .biz, .info, and .name.
Those are two totally divergent viewpoints. Two viewpoints that are both very popular around the Internet.
Which argument is right?
Well of course they both are.
First of all as far as the "old standby" domain name extensions such as. .net, .org and .com. go. They will remain big, bigger and biggest into the forseeable future. First of all .net is the natural extension for the Internet and has a huge head start on the new extensions. It is an extension that will remain big and potentially get much more popular. .Org is reserved for non-profit. That extension is established as well. No worries for that extension either. .Org will remain the premium extension for non-profit organizations.
As for .com which stands for commercial. Of the currently 250 million registered domain names, over 100 million are .com. That extension is at the top of the food chain and there it will stay. Let me ask you one question to settle that point. What company or person would invest any significant amount of money or time in a domain name with the new extensions without owning the .com version as well? No one in their right mind would. With that settled I have a few more points.
There are 300 some country code names such as .cn for China. .jp for Japan and .us for the United States etc. Country code top-level domains total of 110.2 million domain names registrations. Those extensions will continue to be popular. For the same reason that area codes, zip codes and phone extensions remain important. They identify with a certain country or locality. That won't change.
Now as far as for the current extensions that have been deemed less than successful. I would suggest that the new extensions (upwards of 1000 of them) are actually likely to be a boon to the "old extensions" such as .mobi, .biz and .info. The reason is that a new mindset about the place of domain names in our society and lives is about to evolve. What we are about to see is a sea change in how domain names are seen and utilized in our everyday lives. One thousand new domain name extensions flooding the Internet will have a tendency to do that to us. Leave it to the creative types, the marketers and the advertisers to program that into our DNA over the next several years and decades with the new domain name applications that proliferate.
What I'm willing to predict here is that most if not all of the new domain extensions will be successful. Let's simply define success as being profitable and leave it that that as there are thousands of ways to define what would be deemed "successful." (Save for mismanagement by the registry or operators). Some will be wildly successful and some moderately successful and some will scrape by. However, like I just said, All it will take is a change of mindset by the masses as to what domain names can be and how they can be used to enhance our lives. Phone numbers, email addresses (and) domain names. Give it some time.
So I'm also predicting that the introductions of the new gTLDs will be a boon to some of the older (and slightly tired) extensions such as .mobi, .info, and .biz. Domain names are going to become much more prominent and a much more significant part of all of our lives. Without exaggerating, as I've said in previous articles- we will all (or a large majority of us) soon own one, or two or dozens or hundreds of domain names. Just as we all have email addresses and mobile phone numbers. Circumstances that will unfold over the next several years and decades. As I said in the title of this blog. With the new gTLDs... everyone wins.

Mobile Phone Numbers, Email Addresses and ...Domain Names.
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com
Believe it or not there may be a time in the coming years where the question of "what's your domain name?" will be as common as the oft repeated questions of yesteryear such as "what's your email address?" or "what's your mobile phone number?"
How long before we all have our own domain name? or two or three or dozens? My guess is that within 10 years owning an internet domain name will be as common as candy. As common as email addresses. As common as mobile phone numbers. In fact, I think the more common questions will be "how many domain names do you have?" and "what domains do you own" or "what's your domain portfolio valued at?"
The easy analogy for the ultimate place of domain names in our society is of course is to our physical/home address or places that we live. How many of us have home addresses? The places that we live? Of course we all do. If you tabulate that worldwide that would be billions of home addresses. One to match nearly every person with multiple people in many residences.
With the ongoing release of upwards of 1000 new top level domain extensions such as .web, .fun, .pics, .pay, .app, .home, .tube, .win, .cloud, .life, .fun, .book, .movie, .online and on and on and on. - We are all going to have unlimited opportunities for the personalization of our own domain names. Domain names that will be used primarily as Internet identities and Internet addresses. The places that we live on the Internet. Just as most of us move around in the real world and end up having several physical addresses over time. That is what will happen with our domain names. Depending on the usage at the time and our goals and objectives, we will all own at least one or maybe several or dozens or hundreds of domain names over the course of our lives. Some of them we will keep. Some we will sell. Some we will even trade or lease. Just we we do with the places we live in our mobile lives in the real world. Our lives on the Internet will be mobile and changeable and adaptable as well. Innovative and valuable domain name uses are going to spring up and draw us into them. With the introduction of these upwards of 1000 new domain name extensions- domain name applications and uses for the consumer and commercial use alike can ultimately explode exponentially.
Adding to the luster of domain name ownership and registrations are the fact that many domain registrations are going to continue to be purely speculative. Just as they are now. Of the almost 290 million domain names currently registered, how many were registered for speculative purposes? I would venture a guess at least two thirds. Domain Names that were registered as primarily investments. A hedge against the future that someone would pay the individual more in the future than they paid for the name. That trend will continue to happen, grow and I suspect accelerate. Where else can you buy (register) a commodity for say 10-20 dollars and turn around and potentially sell it for thousands of dollars or more? Almost nowhere else. That's called a low barrier to entry. Buying domain names is easy. Speculating on them is fun. Look for that trend to mushroom as well.
With this release of upwards or 1000 new Top Level Domain extensions onto the global marketplace-we are going to gradually see Domain names take a new seat in our society. Domain names are going to become more prevalent, more common, more ordinary and more a part of our everyday lives.
As I mentioned before. Think of mobile phone numbers and think of email addresses. How long ago was it when none of us had either one of those? Just a few short years ago. That is where domains names may be. Quite possibly a big part of all of our lives. Meaning that most of us will have one or more and we will all know what they are and can be used for. Much different than today.
Just give it some time.

Is Google Developing a Domain Name Killer?
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com
Throughout the years there have been a number of "domain name killer" applications come across my desk or teletype machine. I wanted to pass on a recent post I came across about the latest doom and gloom report on domain names.
There is an interesting post by Simon Johnson posted on his website DomainerIncome.com. The title of the article is "New Catastrophic Threat to Domains and new gTLDs." The premise of the article is an unofficial mention from an unofficial Google Blog talking about a new “Google Experiment” which hides the URL in search results.
What could that proposed (experimental) Google browser feature have in consequence for the long term viability of domain names? Some would think that the result could be catastrophic? Especially if additonal browsers move towards the same trend of hiding the URL (domain name) in the search result. Now, do you think this URL blocking feature will get much traction or ever have any widespread usage? If you ask me I don't think it's very likely.
Think of a world without numbered houses, apartments or mailboxes? Without physical addresses? How would that work out?
That's an Internet without domain names.
I"ve written about the integral place of domain names in society before- however this is a good opportunity for me to emphasize some of these points again.
Domain names have everything to do with the Internet. They are identifiers. They are Internet addresses. Just as physical addresses are such in real life. Domain names are critical to our ability to navigate the Internet. Domain names represent the intersection of the real world and the Internet.
Domain names are of course just names. Just as we all use our own personal/legal names and the names of others (how would the world function without people having legal names?) Domain names represent our connection to the Internet and places on the Internet and everything on it.
There are several prevailing currents swirling around the domain name industry that will assure that this potential Google "URL hiding feature" would end up being nothing more than a cute little trick or fad that may or may not be included in some browsers. (and may even end up helping with the growth and usage of domain names).
First of all, there is a very good chance that a URL hiding feature in the search results could be a boon for domain names. If the domain names are hidden in the search results-then users would have that much more motivation/incentive to learn, know and record (maybe an app to save them) so the domain names/sites could be accessed immediately when needed. Think of saving phone numbers or email addresses in your smart phone or address book. We could get to that point with domain names. But you will still need the names. Now that everyone has everyone elses phone number in their address book did that eliminate the usage of phone numbers? Of course not.
With the impending launch of upwards of 1000 new gTLD domain name extensions-we are about to see a massive explosion in domain name registration and usage. I have predicted on previous blog posts that we are likely to see the number of current domain name registrations which are 250 million- to easily jump by a multiple of 10 in 2 or 3 years. That would be 2.5 billion registered names in a few short years. Suffice it to say that we are going to see explosive growth in domain name registrations in the coming few years. By consumers. By companies. By Industries. By governments. This is just going to happen.
Now I have to mention that with the impending launch of upwards of 1000 new gTLDs- Google recently applied for the ability to administrate over 100 of those domain name extensions through an entity called Charleston Road Registry Inc. Google paid almost 20 million dollars in application fees for the right to potentially run these registries. Google stands to make billions of dollars in profits from running these new domain name registries and they stand to develop countless applications for the new gTLDs. What is the chance that they would send their own cash cow (the new gTLDs) out to pasture and block the domain name results in their browser? That's not likely to happen.
Also, I should remind you that Google is the company that also recently proposed to offer dotless domain names with the .search top level extension that they have applied for. That project was shot down in a "New York minute" by ICANN (the Internet overseer) as the Google proposal was found to be very risky and unsecure to the domain name infrastructure. My point is that Google clearly experiments in alot of areas. Not all of them fruitful.

Is Trend Convergence About to Change the Internet?
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com
The basic theory of trend convergence is the idea of several trends coming together to create social change and/or new trends. A single trend is very important. A convergence of trends can be transformational. The most profound social change occurs when different types of trends (economic, demographic, technological, social/cultural) come together.
Are the convergence of several popular technology trends about to blow the doors off the comfy confines of the Internet? If so, the new gTLD domain name extensions may just be a catalyst. These new (upwards of 1000) domain platforms may be just what the Internet needed to take it to a new level of personalization, individualization, application and integration into our everyday lives.
Due to the ongoing release by ICANN (the Internets govering body) of upwards of 1000 new GTLDs (Global Top Level Domain Names) the Internet may be facing a mighty sea change-the likes of which we have not seen before.
Along with the release of the new GTLDs, there are several prevailing trends advancing concurrently. These technology trends are of course all related. What I'm referring to are the following:
The Internet of Everything (Cisco).
Individualization
Mobilization of the Internet
In-Memory Data (Computing)
Introduction of New GTLDs.
The Ghosts of Madison Avenue
Cisco defines the Internet of Everything (IoE) as bringing together people, process, data, and things to make networked connections more relevant and valuable than ever before-turning information into actions that create new capabilities...
The best definition of Individualization is from the Dictionary: to make individual or distinctive; give an individual or distinctive character to. Just think individualized services and Individualized Internet.
Mobilization of the Internet has to do of course with the world becoming increasingly mobile and connected to the Internet. The world is getting online and at an accelerated rate. The populations lagging behind have been India, China and Africa. They are fast catching up and getting connected.
In-Memory Data technology/computing is apparently very, very fast. Lets leave the topic at that.
The introduction of upwards of 1000 new GTLDs (Global Top Level Domain Names) (from the current number of 22 extensions) may end up being a major catalyst that pulls much of this new Internet together.
You are going to see a sea change with domain name registrations (with the introduction of the new GTLDs) that are going to have alot to do with individualization and how companies use the domain names in their services. Up until now most domain name registrations were in the categories of business names and/or keyword names and generic terms. With the new GTLDs much of those registrations will still happen. Especially with upwards of 1000 new extensions to choose from. However, the a massive growth in domain name registrations is going to ultimately relate to individualization. What you will see is most everyone ultimately owning one, or two or dozens or more domain names. Yes owning domain names could become more common than email addresses. Many of these new domain name registrations are going to related directly to the individual. Not a business. Not a keyword. Not a generic term. Not a brandable name. But to the person.
Two things to keep in mind. First of all domain names are also Internet addresses. Everyone has an address in the physical world. How long before everyone has an address in the virtual world? Or many? Think of your Facebook page or your LinkedIn page as an example. Those are some of the more popular addresses right now. Secondly, there are going to be unlimited applications that spring up relating to individuals owning their own domain name related to a service. Some industries that I think are particularly ripe for these (Individualized) services are data storage, communication, business, networking and entertainment. Without getting into the technological details of how these services will work, suffice it to say that you will own or be assigned a domain name related to the service. An individual domain name. An identifier for you. The domain name will either be some type of id/locater, or username, location (web page), secure id or some other type of identifier.
Maybe the best way to view the new gTLDs is as a new technology platform. Potentially a transformative platform. Just as we have seen in recent years with cloud computing and app-applications.
One last thought.
There was a time when many of the smartest ad executives hung out in the smoke filled back rooms on the notorious Madison Avenue in New York. This was from around 1920 to the 1980's. Basically pre-Internet. Well many of these ad-types (and their children and grandchildren) have gone on to influence many of the Internet behemoths of today. The "Madison Avenue types" of the Facebooks, Amazons, Yahoos, Microsofts, Googles, Apples IBMs and the like are mapping (as we speak) their GTLD strategies as it relates to todays marketplace and the applications for domain name platforms for their particular companies. Thinking of unique and innovative ways to engage with the customers and to expand brand development and loyalty with the new GTLDs. There are many BIG companies with BIG pockets spending a good deal of time considering to how capitalize and exploit the introductions of the new GTLDs and particularly in terms of their own brand marketing. Domain name platforms are about to be (even more) prominent in terms of corporate brand strategies and advertising and marketing purposes. What we will see as the new GTLDs are introduced and unfold is hundreds and thousands of new applications for domain names that are not front and center today. Many uses that haven't even been thought of yet as the domain name industry leaves its infancy and enters a maturing phase over the next several years.

Are Premium Domain Names Jumping the Dot?
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo
xtradot.com
The Internet is currently being reorganized on a grand scale and many are scrambling to make heads or tails of what the new domain name landscape will look like when the smoke is cleared in a few short years. We are all staring face to face with a massive expansion of the domain name system. The scale of which is not likely to ever be seen again.
Up until just recently there have been just 22 (generic) global top level domain name extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .edu and .org. ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is in the process of expanding that number of domain number extensions from 22 to upwards of 1000 new extensions. In my last blog post listed all of the 1930 applications that ICANN received for the new Global Top Level Domain Names.
So take the full list of the current 22 top level domain extensions. Soon over one thousand new extensions to that list that will soon be added. That is where we will be in few short years. Some of the initial (extension) introductions are already active and more coming week by week. What will that all do to the ordering of the domain name system and the Internet as a whole?
What is likely to ultimately happen is a "buy up" of the new name domain names with the new extensions. Given that there are over 250 million currently registered names with the only 22 historic domain extensions (plus some country code extensions such as .us, .cn, .jp, .ca etc). We could ultimately see the total domain registrations jump from 250 million into the billions over time. That would be a big jump after taking 20 years for the Internet to get to the 250 million domain registrations.
However, what I find more interesting is what is likely to be Phase II of the domain expansions. What would you think if we soon had 10,000 or 100,000 new domain extensions? How could that happen? Very easily. The same way that the first expansion happened. However as often is the case with technological advancements, developments and innovation- the cost of the applications for the domain extensions will likely drop dramatically. What if the (ICANN) application fee was was dropped to say $25,000 worldwide (from the current $185,000 application fee)? How many applications would there have been this round? Likely more than the 1930 that ICANN received this round. As the applications become more affordable (and they will) you will see more and more applications. Also, you will see more and more applications and nearly limitless applications for the new domain name extensions. As I mentioned in a previous post. There are over 7 billion people in the world. How long before most everyone has a domain name or two, or many or hundreds?
If there were eventually 100,000 Global Top Level domain extensions-what would have happened to domain names and to the ordering of the Internet? What would have happened- is that second level domain names (the name to the left of the dot) would have essentially become what is the top level domain name now (the right of the dot.) The premium domain names would have "jumped the dot."
So for example with the current system you now have app.com, apps.com and applications.com (or .net, .org, .info or .whatever). Those would be second level domain names with top level extensions.
If .App, .Apps and .Applications were to become top level extensions (and they all certainly might) then we have massively expanded the "applications" and uses of that category of domain names.
For example with the word "app" with "original" 22 global top level domain extensions you have 22 options for app. app.com, app.,net, app.org etc. With the new .app extension you would now have literally millions of potential uses and possibilities for that name. For example games.app, downloads.app, sports.app etc. etc. etc. You can now do that for every extension.
So back to my original premise and speculation as to what the domain name landscape could become with 1000, 10,000 or 100,000 new top level extensions. What you would have is a gradual and evolutionary process of what are now the second level domain names transitioning to largely become the new top level domain names. Or that the premium domain names are essentially moving from the left of the dot to the right. The aforementioned "jumping the dot." That is of course a gross simplification of that process given that each new top level domain name extension opens up literally millions of new second level domain name combinations with that one extension. However, the effect could be the same.

Are You Ready for a New Internet?
By Duane J. Higgins, ceo

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), is preparing for the largest ever expansion of the domain name system. The group received 1930 applications for new domain name extensions. (GTLDs). Below is a list of the proposed new Global Top Level Domain Names that have been applied for at $180,000 per application. Names that drew multiple applications will go through a resolution process.
(I haven't seen this new proposed new (GTLD) list posted in many places in its entirety and wanted to post it in my blog for reference. Note that a few applications have already been withdrawn and a few applicants have found other resolutions or combined resources.)
